A super simple healthy gluten-free dip perfect for a quick healthy snack or appetizer to gather friends and family.

Choosing The Best Avocados

There are many avocado varieties and the best one for guacamole is Hass avocado.

Their flesh is flavorsome and so creamy when simply mashed by fork.

If you are unsure of your avocado variety, keep in mind that Hass is the most common avocado variety and you can also make guacamole with other varieties!

How To Make This 4-Ingredient Guacamole Recipe

It’s super easy to make quick guacamole with only 4 ingredients.

Ingredients

All you need are:

  • Ripe Avocado – it means that if you remove the top stem of your avocado the flesh under it is green and the avocado is soft when pressed. If your avocado is too soft or the color under the top stem is dark brown, then it means that the avocado is overripe and not good for this easy guacamole recipe
  • Garlic cloves
  • Salt
  • Freshly squeezed Lime juice – read my post here if you are having trouble getting juice from a lime

Mashing

First, cut the avocado in half and remove the pit.

Then, remove any dark or brown spot in the avocado flesh and discard.

Brown spots add a bitter taste to guacamole so it’s better to discard this part of your fruit.

Finally, use a fork or a potato masher to mash the avocado on a chopping.

Making Smooth Guacamole

The best way to make creamy guacamole with no pieces of avocado is to blend all the ingredients in a food processor.

First. process avocado flesh. lime juice, garlic, and salt until smooth.

Then, increase creaminess by adding some of the below:

  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Tahini
  • Yogurt
  • Sour cream

Guacamole Add-Ons

Of course, you can feel creative and add some spices and ingredients to make your guacamole much more flavorsome.

The most authentic and delicious add-ons to your guacamole are:

  • Diced onion – white onions or red onions taste amazing.
  • Finely diced tomatoes
  • Cilantro
  • Pinch of spices like Paprika, Cumin, and Onion powder.

Serving Guacamole

This easy 4-ingredient guacamole recipe is delicious as a dip for:

  • Tortillas chips
  • Cucumber sticks
  • Carrot sticks
  • Celery sticks
  • In tacos for a quick Mexican lunch with Pico de Gallo and grilled chicken.

Or to spread on your favorite Cheese Quesadilla, Cheese Quesadilla, or Taco Stuffed Avocados.

Storage Instructions

The tricky part with guacamole is to keep it green. In fact, avocados oxidize when in contact with air and the top of your guacamole turns brown with time.

It can usually be stored for up to 2 days in the fridge if you follow the rules below:

  • Brush the top of the guacamole with lemon juice or lime juice or add a few tablespoons of olive oil to the top.
  • Store it in an airtight container.

Some recipe will recommend keeping it longer, up to 3-4 days but again the surface of the guacamole get darker and if your avocados were quite ripe, then the flavor of the guacamole turns bad.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you freeze guacamole?

Yes, absolutely! You can freeze leftover homemade guacamole in plastic wrap or airtight containers and thaw it in the fridge the day before.

What to add to guacamole to make it taste better?

Make sure to use avocados at the perfect state of ripeness. Too ripe and the guacamole will taste earthy and moldy. Too young and the guacamole will be bitter.
Then you add any of the following toppings to make it even better:
– Diced onion – white onion or red onion
– Finely diced tomatoes
– Cilantro
– A pinch of spices like Paprika, Cumin, Onion powder

What is the main ingredient of guacamole?

The most important ingredient of guacamole is fresh, ripe avocados. Their green flesh brings the color, taste, and texture to the guacamole. All the other ingredients are just to make it even better.

What ingredient keeps guacamole from turning brown?

Lemon juice increases the acidity of the guacamole, making it last longer. To keep the top of your guac green, you can also add a thin layer of olive oil or even water as it forms a protective shield that improves its shelf life.

Why does my guacamole taste bland?

The taste of guacamole depends mostly on the ripeness of the avocado. A perfect avocado makes delicious guacamole. But the tanginess and spiciness of the guac also depend on the lemon or lime juice you add and the spices.

Can I Make Guacamole Spicier?

Yes, you can add a taco mix to the guacamole. Try my Low Sodium Taco Seasoning, Carne Asada Seasoning, or my Chicken Taco Seasoning.

FAQs

What do restaurants put in guacamole to keep it from turning brown? ›

Guacamole enthusiasts have devised all kinds of tips and tricks for how to keep avocados from turning brown and many have trickled down to guacamole storage: Leaving the pit in, pressing plastic wrap onto the surface, and adding citrus juice are popular options, but there are plenty of eclectic anti-browning methods ...

Does lemon or lime juice keep guacamole from turning brown? ›

DOES LEMON JUICE KEEP GUACAMOLE FROM TURNING BROWN? Yes! The lemon forms a barrier between the outside air and the guacamole to make sure the dip stays its greenest. Seal it in a container or with plastic wrap and refrigerate it.

Can you use lemon juice instead of lime juice in guacamole? ›

I know the traditional way uses lime, but I personally prefer guacamole with lemon! I like the flavor better with lemon juice, but lime works too. If you're out of fresh lemons or limes, try using bottled lime or lemon juice. Although, freshly squeezed juice is definitely the best!

Should you put tomatoes in guacamole? ›

Add tomatoes to your guac.

In my opinion, all guacamole should include tomato for texture and flavor. Regular tomatoes tend to be too watery, so go for grape tomatoes instead! You can quarter them and they'll stay nice and firm.

Why should you leave the lime out of guacamole? ›

You see, lime is a very strong acidic flavor and it can easily overpower the delicate flavor of the avocado.

How do restaurants keep avocados from turning brown? ›

The main goal is to prevent oxygen from touching the avocado's flesh. Plastic wrap is a practical, albeit not foolproof way to slow down the natural course of fruit aging. The trick is to make sure the plastic wrap is sealed flush with the flesh.

How far ahead can you make guacamole before it turns brown? ›

To keep fresh overnight:

Adding a thin layer of water over top of your bowl of guacamole is a great barrier against oxygen, and since guacamole is heavy, the little liquid that may seep down into the bowl will not water it down. If you use this method, your guacamole should stay fresh for up to 3 days.

Why does my guacamole taste sour? ›

The most likely answer is an ingredient most people don't put in their homemade recipe but is in almost all store-bought versions. Citric acid is a commonly used flavoring and preservative in mass food production. This ingredient is used to prevent enzymatic browning and infuse a tart, bright flavor.

What is traditional guacamole made of? ›

Here's all you need for traditional guacamole: ripe avocados, coriander/cilantro, red onions, jalapeño or Serrano chilli, lime and salt. Avoid unnecessary fillers such as sour cream and cream cheese. They only dilute flavour. Popular optional extras include: garlic, tomato, cumin powder.

Is garlic in guacamole? ›

Turns out, authentic guacamole doesn't have garlic. This is when Mark educated me on what goes into a proper guacamole (you should memorize this): avocados, lemon juice, red onion, a tomato, salt, pepper and two ingredients The Barefoot Contessa doesn't have in her recipe but which Mark considers essential....

How do I make sure my guacamole doesn't go bad? ›

Use a spoon to flatten the surface of the dip and remove any air bubbles. Add about a half-inch of water to the top of the guacamole. Make sure the water covers the whole surface of the batch. Put the lid or covering on the container, and store in the fridge for two to three days.

What makes guacamole unhealthy? ›

Store-bought guacamole often contains sour cream, added sugar, artificial flavors, preservatives, and a lot of sodium.

How to tell if guacamole is bad? ›

Once opened, store-bought guacamole usually lasts 1-2 days. Homemade guacamole also usually lasts 1-2 days. You'll know it's gone bad when it has a substantial puddle of brown liquid and the layers below the surface have lost their vibrant green hue. That's when it's time to throw it out.
