AI-enabled Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) system for Secondary Battery Manufacturing (1)

Location: South Korea

Introduction

Secondary battery manufacturers face increasing demands for high-performance vision inspection systems due to the need for high-pixel images and high-speed inspections. A secondary battery manufacturer from the Republic of Korea planned to build a manufacturing line in the US and required a modern AOI inspection solution to meet their requirements. Advantech's AI AOI vision inspection solution is designed to meet the needs of secondary battery manufacturers who require high-pixel image and high-speed inspection systems by deploying an HPC-7484 4U server with an ASMB-927 5th Gen Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors to support these manufacturing lines while remaining compact, cool, and efficient.

A secondary battery, commonly known as a rechargeable battery, is a type of electrical energy storage device that can be recharged and used repeatedly. Unlike primary batteries, which are disposed of after a single use, secondary batteries allow for the reversal of the chemical reactions that occur during discharge by applying electrical energy, thereby restoring their charge. These batteries are essential in a wide range of applications, from consumer electronics like smartphones and laptops to electric vehicles and renewable energy storage systems. Their ability to provide reliable, long-lasting, and efficient power makes them a crucial component in the pursuit of sustainable and portable energy solutions.

Project Requirements

To use these advanced vision inspection systems, more space for installation is required and cost concerns must be addressed. To enhance the performance of the vision system, an additional system with a grabber card and GPU was added. While the GPU's performance has been improved, eliminating the need for two sets of cards, an extra grabber card is still necessary to capture high-pixel images without delay. However, the system's overall performance does not yet match the desired level, necessitating a more powerful, compact, and thermally reliable system to accommodate high-speed cards and enable seamless integration of premium components while addressing space and cost concerns.

Project Description

Advantech's HPC-7484+ASMB-927 4U server is a high-performance, compact, and thermally -reliable system that meets these demands. The system is equipped with a 5th Gen Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors, Micron DDR5 5200 MHz RDIMM with up to 4TB of total storage, RTX4080 GPU, and CoaXPress grabber cards to capture camera images and support video/image analysis and AI inference. The system is designed to manage thermal issues with three 12cm system fans.

  • High-Performance GPU and Grabber Card: High-performance GPU and grabber cards can be installed in one system, making it ideal for AI applications.
  • Simplified Management: The solution reduces the number of devices to manage, simplifying management and maintenance.

Conclusion

Advantech's high-performance AI AOI vision inspection solution is designed to meet the needs of secondary battery manufacturers who require high pixel image and high-speed inspection systems. The HPC 7484+ASMB 927 4U Server with 5th gen Intel® Xeon® Scalable processors is a compact and thermally reliable system that meets these demands. With its high-performance GPU and grabber cards, the solution is ideal for AI applications, reducing system size and simplifying management. Additionally, the integration of Micron's high-performance DDR5 5200 MHz RDIMM up to 4TB (16 DIMMs) memory enhances the system's capability to handle large data volumes and complex computations with greater efficiency. This combination not only boosts the inspection speed and accuracy but also ensures that the system can cope with the intensive data processing requirements of modern secondary battery production, thereby optimizing overall productivity and quality control.

Why Advantech

Advantech offers dependable industrial-grade server systems, ensuring all components are assembled on the CTOS (Configure To Order Services)line, which guarantees system qualification by Advantech. Even top-tier systems are prone to overheating; therefore, the HPC-7484 is equipped with three system fans to maintain thermal stability. This design allows customers to operate a reliable and stable system. In the event of a requested system configuration change, Advantech provides reliable pre-deployment testing to ensure a smooth transition.
