I wasn’t too much of a lemonade fan as a kid, but I think I just didn’t have a great lemonade to try. I remember it being super sour and some were gritty. So how do we fix that? With simple syrup.

What is simple syrup?
Simple syrup is made of 1 part water to 1 part sugar. The mixture is heated on the stove to dissolve the sugar crystals. Once completed you get a thin, clear-yellow tinted mixture. Using simple syrup in lemonade makes for a smooth and sweet lemonade.
What can I use to juice lemons?
I have an electric blender (not sponsored) and it’s AMAZING. If you don’t have one of these you can use a hand juicer, blender, or if all else fails squeeze it by hand.
Can I make this easy lemonade recipe sugar free?
Yes. If you like super sour lemonade you could omit the sugar, however chances are you’d like to add a little sweetness. You can replace the sugar with
- Honey
- Agave
- Any sugar substitute
How many lemons do I need to make lemonade?
The amount of juice in each lemon varies greatly. On average a lemon can yield 3-4 tablespoons of juice. I had lemons on the larger size and it took about 4 lemons to make 1 cup of juice.

How to make the easy lemonade recipe?
Original lemonade
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup lemon juice
In a small pot heat water to a rolling boil. Add sugar and stir until dissolved. The mixture will be clear when it is ready. Set aside and cool. Juice about 4-5 medium to large lemons. If using an electric juicer remove the lemon rind as this will create a bitter taste. In a pitcher combine 1 cup simple syrup and 1 cup lemon juice. Stir to combine. Add 2-3 cups of water to dilute. Adjust sweetness by adding more simple syrup if needed. Add ice prior to serving. The ice will melt and dilute the lemonade further.
Li hing mui lemonade
Make a batch of the original lemonade as above. Add 1 teaspoon of li hing mui powder. Stir to combine.
What is li hing mui?
Li hing mui is made from salted, dried plums. It’s a sweet, sour, salty taste. You can find it in a seed form or powdered form. Here in Hawai’i, we like to add it to fruits, drinks, mochi crunch, or eat it as is. This can be found in the candy or snack aisle at your local grocery store. On the mainland you may be able to find it at an Asian market. If you’re out of luck finding li hing mui in the store you can purchase some on Amazon.
Lilikoi lemonade
- ½ cup lemon juice
- ½ cup lilikoi juice
- 1 cup simple syrup
- 3-4 cups water
Combine all ingredients in a pitcher. Stir to combine. Serve over ice.
What is lilikoi?
Lilikoi is the Hawaiian name for passion fruit. The original origin of lilikoi is unknown, but it has become very well established in the Pacific islands and in Central and South America. It has a smooth thick yellow rind and filled with juicy pulp and many seeds. The seeds are edible.
Are lilikoi healthy?
Sure is. It’s packed with vitamin C, A, and fiber.
What is lilikoi used for?
Lilikoi can be eaten fresh, juiced for drinks, baking, sauces, flavoring, etc.
Where can I find lilikoi?
In Hawai’i lilikoi can be found at your local farmers market, some grocery stores, and if anything you probably know someone who has a vine. If you live in the mainland or elsewhere you can always purchase the puree on Amazon.
