There are many good teachers and a lot of hardworking students, and the school provides a lot of support. However, sometimes the policies, administration, and some teachers are rigid and do not work well with student organizations.

At Leland and many high schools, there was much more of a focus and funding put into sport rather than arts programs. I was in the drama class and we always had issue with sound and lighting equipment, without fail, all four years I was there - even when we were able to get a new system in the final year. The school also had a very academically competitive student culture, I recall many times of my peers boasting how little sleep they had, like it was a competition of who could stay up working the latest. I fell into this habit for some time, too. The school was good for academics, but since being in college, I recognize it severely lacked in creating a healthy student culture around those academics and providing equal support for different extracurriculars. Since graduating, it has taken a lot of effort to change the way I view education; and not having my self worth rely on how many units I take, my volunteering hours, or my gpa.

Leland High School is great at providing students with a community where hard work is appreciated and avenues to success are provided. While, like any school, there are good and bad teachers and courses, Leland does well to provide students with second chances and recover from mistakes. Overall, my time at Leland has been generally favorable. However, this school does push hard on students to succeed academically. There seems to be some social divide between those who work extremely hard to succeed (straight As) and those who do not see a need for perfection. This is not necessarily bad but will become apparent as a student's grade level increases. There has been a recent change in administration, though the school's quality has not diminished at all from what I can tell. Generally, Leland is a great school for those who want to push themselves throughout their high school years.
