Where can I read car codes for free? ›

Many auto parts stores offer code readings as a free service. Advance Auto Parts, AutoZone, and O'Reilly are among the stores that will. (So do many other chains and independent stores. Check with your local store to find out whether they offer this service, and whether it's free.)

DTC stands for Diagnostic Trouble Codes, which was created by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). The codes are generated by a vehicle's onboard diagnostic (OBD) system. Each character in a 5-digit DTC represents a specific issue.

There are four different types of OBD-II codes – P, B, C, and U. The P stands for powertrain (engine and transmission) systems, B for body, C for chassis, and U for network and wiring systems. If the ECU commands the check engine light to illuminate, there will always be at least one P0 code stored.

What code readers do mechanics use? ›

Most car mechanics will use an OBD scanner to retrieve the error codes and evaluate their severity. Almost all OBD2 error codes are publicly available and can be found on various blogs and websites.

Scan tools provide you with live data and are significantly more in-depth with their diagnoses than code readers. Code readers are used to retrieve and clear DTCs, displaying generic codes to let you know if there's anything wrong with your vehicle.

Monitor Status – If the code reader's LCD display shows the message 0 DTC (indicating there are no DTCs present in the vehicle's computer), but the yellow LED is lit, it indicates a Monitor Has Not Run status. This means that some of the monitors on the vehicle have not yet finished their diagnostic self-testing.

Monitor icons - These icons indicate which Monitors are supported by the vehicle under test, and whether or not the associated Monitor has run its diagnostic testing (Monitor status). When a Monitor icon is solid, it indicates that the associated Monitor has completed its diagnostic testing.
